A former U.S. Navy officer, he began his career in the Navy's Nuclear Power program and qualified as a Nuclear Mechanical Operator before finishing his degree in Mathematics from North Carolina State University and subsequent commissioning as an officer. He later served in Information Security Management roles for the Navy which included an Information Systems Security Engineering Senior Program Manager position at the National Security Agency. Douglas holds a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Douglas' work in energy-efficient construction grew out of a systems-level investigation into why modern homes remain expensive to operate despite decades of technical advancement. His research led to the development of THE CLEAN STANDARD, a practical framework for designing and building homes that dramatically reduces energy demand and improves comfort, durability, and affordability.
